Artist Paints Stunningly Realistic #Portraits on His Hand and Stamps Them on Paper

Artist Russell Powell creates stunningly realistic portraits on an unconventional surface – his own hand. The California-based teacher merges art and the body by painting eye-catching depictions of people on his palms. Incredibly, this textured and creased surface doesn’t deter him from adding intricate details and dramatic shading that gives the paintings a three-dimensional feel.

Powell’s works don’t just stay on his hands. Once he has completed a portrait, he touches his palm to paper. This process is called “hand-stamping,” and it’s how the artist records his pieces in a permanent way. He’s able to paint quickly enough that the medium doesn’t dry, meaning that his works are clearly imprinted. In addition, the stamping showcases Powell’s unique fingerprints and will always remind us from where his beautiful images originated.

Former taxi driver Mike Harvey shuttled so many eclectic individuals around Neath, Wales, that he decided to buy a DSLR camera to document his experiences. What resulted was this riveting black-and-white portrait series showcasing a spectrum of personalities.During his four years at the wheel, Harvey sped a pregnant woman to a hospital, was asked for permission to sniff cocaine in the back seat, and witnessed passengers scampering away without paying.His portrait series, taken throughout 2010, seems to capture this wild variety. One woman holds a CD in her teeth as she struggles to count coins for her fare. A young man wearing a Santa hat lounges in the backseat with his girlfriend. Other riders sport outlandish jewelry, interesting tattoos and colorful facial expressions. Meanwhile, the back window displays a variety of urban and suburban…

Detailed Portraits Made with Only Text are Produced Using a Typewriter

At first glance, you might not realize just how Brazilian graphic designer Álvaro Franca creates his stylized portraits. A closer look reveals that his subjects’ faces, hair, and clothing are all comprised of letterforms that are impressively produced on a vintage typewriter. Aptly titled Typewritten Portraits, text is grouped together and gives five of Franca’s favorite authors a sense of form and shading.

To craft these works, Franca created reference images on his computer. It gave him an idea of where the dark and light parts are on a face, and he used this as a guide when pecking away on his typewriter. Certain letterforms seem to be perfect for conveying a sense of realism in the portraits. The “m,” when placed together, creates a dense, shaded area, and we can see that the designer also layered text to further enhance this…

I can’t say that pizza isn’t an important part of my life, but this couple took their dedication to our favourite carb-loaded, cheese-covered meal to a new level. They made it part of their wedding!

Artist Nathan Wyburn was hired by Dominos when Bride and Groom—Kieran & Natasha Morris—asked for pizza to be part of their January Wedding.

This week marks the 32nd anniversary of Rolling Stone’s famous cover featuring a portrait of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, photographed by Annie Leibovitz. It was the last professional photo captured of the iconic musician, who was killed hours later outside his apartment in New York City. We’re discounting the chilling image fan Paul Goresh took of Lennon and Chapman that fateful morning.

“What is interesting is she said she’d take her top off and I said, ‘Leave everything on’ — not really preconceiving the picture at all,” Leibovitztold the magazine. “Then he curled up next to her and it was very, very strong. You couldn’t help but feel that he was cold and he looked like he was clinging on to her. I think it was amazing to look at the first Polaroid and they were both very excited. John said, ‘You’ve captured our relationship exactly. Promise me it’ll be on the cover.’ I looked him in the eye and we shook on it.”

Leibovitz had only planned to photograph Lennon, but the image of the couple turned out to be one of her most famous portraits and would define one of the most talked about relationships in pop culture history. Kurt Cobain

Jesse Frohmantook these photos of Kurt Cobain close to his 1994 suicide, and they were exhibited last year in commemoration of the 18th anniversary of his passing.The Observer commissioned the images. Dressed in Jackie O sunglasses and a leopard coat, Cobain is seen clinging to his cigarette and a bottle (of something) with peeling nail polish. He looks worn, but every bit the iconoclast his fans remember. See other photos in the series over here.
